The Saul Goldin Memorial Lighting Design Competition was established to encourage and recognize students in Southern California who have shown an understanding of light and its effect on Architecture. These awards have been established by the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, Los Angeles Section (IESLA). The IESNA is an international organization whose purpose is to promote lighting education and to develop recommended lighting practices.

It is in the spirit of the late Saul Goldin, an electrical engineer, a lighting designer in Los Angeles since 1960, an architect and beloved teacher at USC and SCI-Arc, that this award has been created.
